In ancient China, there lived a famous poet named Chu Yuan.

He often submitted opinions about good government to the emperor.

But he was exiled as a dissident, over and over again.

Finally, he gave up. He killed himself by jumping into a river.

People near the river rowed boats around trying to find his body.

Meanwhile, they threw many rice dumplings into the river hoping to feed the hungry fish and, thereby, protect Chu Yuan's body.

This happened on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

This is the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival.
