Legend has it that there was a scary monster called Nian in ancient
China. Every year in the winter it would come out to eat animals and
people. Later, some smart guys found that Nian was afraid of red color,
bright light, and loud noise. That is why people hang red paper on door,
light firecrackers, and hit on metal objects during the Chinese New Year holidays.
